Volleyball kicks off 2025 Season at Sony Lewis Classic
Auburn Hills, MI- A new era of Oakland Community College volleyball begins on Friday as the Owls kick off the 2025 season at the Sony Lewis Classic in Perrysburg, Ohio as they open up the season with four matches over the Labor Day weekend.
The 2024 season finished with the Owls compiling a record of 3-18, which placed them in sixth in the MCCAA East standings, but are setting their sights higher moving into the 2025 campaign. The Owls returned 4 players from last year's squad and added an additional 7 recruits to the roster, giving the Owls 7 sophomores and 4 freshman representing this year's team.
Of the biggest changes that came to Owl volleyball this offseason, is the hiring of first year head coach Colleen Szakacs. The former high school coach at Bishop Foley, Szakacs is more than ready for what this season will bring. "I'm incredibly excited to lead this program into a new chapter. We have a talented hardworking group that's eager to grow and compete at a high level. Our focus this season is on building a strong team chemistry, setting a foundation of discipline, and playing with relentless energy every time we step on the court. It's a fresh start, and we're ready to rise to the challenge."
The Owls open up the Owen's Invitational with matches against Waubonsee Community College and Harper College on Friday, followed by two more on Saturday as they go up against Cuyahoga Community College and Danville Area Community College to round out the weekend.
The first home game for the Owls will be on Monday, September 15th against Macomb Community College, where OCC will also be hosting the annual Talon Tailgate! The tailgate begins at 5pm with the game time scheduled for 7pm.
